Meet the Research Team
Peter is a Web3 Foundation Director and a lead researcher at Web3 Foundation where he works on supporting the development of the next generation of distributed technologies. He has given multiple talks on various blockchain topics at conferences and meetups. As a principal engineer at Parity Technologies, he contributed to the Parity Ethereum Client development, in particular looking at consensus algorithms, as well as driving enterprise solutions built on the Parity technology stack.
At Web3 Research, Peter is leading initiatives into consensus mechanisms, nominated proof of stake and more.
Alistair is a Web3 Foundation Researcher working on protocol design. Alistair is the architect behind GRANDPA, Polkadot’s novel finality gadget. Moreover, he has worked on the validator selection scheme NPoS and designed Polkadot’s availability and validity scheme.
Alistair has been a postdoc in theoretical Computer Science at USC where he worked in learning theory with breakthrough results in high-dimensional robust statistics. Prior to that, he obtained a PhD in Informatics from the University of Edinburgh on infinite-state stochastic models. Alistair holds a masters degree in Informatics from the University of Edinburgh.
Fatemeh is a researcher at Web3 Foundation helping with the Polkadot protocol. She is working on a couple of research challenges at Web3 Foundation such as interoperability and networking.
Fatemeh obtained her PhD degree in Electronic Engineering from KU Leuven, where her research focused on improving anonymous communication systems. She was also a research assistant at TU Darmstadt, where she worked on measuring resilience of anonymous communication systems against DoS attacks. Fatemeh obtained her masters degree in Computer Science from Saarland University, where she was also a student assistant in the Secure Systems group at the German Institute for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI).
Jeff Burdges is a cryptography researcher at the Web 3 Foundation, where he works on diverse topics around as collaborative randomness and block production. Jeff has found vulnerabilities in cryptographic systems, most recently the BIP32-Ed25519 proposal. He is also researching a new peer-to-peer private messaging service that will use mix networks.
Previously, he worked at Inria Rennes. His work includes anonymity protocols, diverse topics around signature schemes, verifiable random functions, distributed authentication, forward-secure ratchets, and pairing-based protocol. Jeff holds a PhD degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University.
Syed is a Web3 Foundation researcher writing the Polkadot Runtime Environment (PRE) specification. He is also researching some of PRE’s primitives to see if they can be improved or simplified and helping with the implementation of various Algebraic and cryptographic primitives.
As a mathematician studying for his PhD, Syed focused on curve based cryptography, specifically geometric structures that offer richer mathematical properties than elliptic curves. He has studied and designed provably secure messaging protocols. He has been involved in the development of various network protocols, ML-based attack mitigation and analysis and distributed and cooperative network solutions.
Handan Kılınç Alper
As a research scientist, Handan is responsible for conducting research in cryptographic topics, designing protocols and proving their security. She also works with development teams for the implementation of our research results.
Handan received her PhD degree from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. Her research was on the implications of position in cryptography which has use cases in contactless payment and access control protocols, localization (e.g., GPS) and secure positioning. Handan also worked on the fairness of multi-party computation. In general, she has experience in designing security models, constructing protocols and analyzing/proving the security of protocols.
Alfonso Bolivar Cevallos Manzano
Alfonso’s research is focused on decentralized algorithms, where he workes on Polkadot’s Nominated Proof of Stake scheme and its governance scheme.
He received a PhD degree at EPFL in Lausanne focusing on discrete optimization, where he used tools such as linear and integer programming, geometry and graph theory, to analyze discrete optimization problems, and provide rigorous proofs on their quality and efficiency. Alfonso earned a joint master’s degree in France (U. Bordeaux) and the Netherlands (U. Leiden). His master’s thesis was on the topic of secret sharing, which is a primitive for threshold signatures. He has developed an interest in blockchain technologies for the last couple of years.
